The content of Greek mythology is not a simple matter. There is an endless series of narratives from different eras and with different origins, for which great efforts have been made to locate, classify, cross-reference and compare them with parallel myths, historical narratives and events, so as to put together the texts as a whole. However strange it might seem, a Greek myth is not quite a “fairy tale”. It represents some distant eras, fills in historical gaps and, above all is an indicator of the cultural level.

Aussi des recherches approfondies ont-elles ete necessaire pour localiser, classer, confronter et comparer divers recits et evenements mythologiques et historiques avant de pouvoir etablir les textes et les mettre en forme.  Aussi curieux que cela puisse paraitre, les mythes ne sont pas de part en part des “contes”. Ils temoignent d’epoques lointaines et revolues, comblent des lacunes historiques mais, avant toute chose, ils sont le signe du niveau qu’a atteint une civilisation.
