Messenia lies in the south-western corner of the Peloponnese. It is washed by the Ionian Sea and the Gulf of Messene. The Prefecture of Messenia, is the second-most densely populated Prefecture in the Peloponnese, after Achaia, with about 167,000 inhabitants. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was on Messenian soil that the second large state in the Peloponnese developed.
