Lefkada’s position among the famous and celebrated islands of the
Ionian chain is a simple one, yet impossible to overlook. This is a
verdant little place which Nature has blessed with contradictions
that cannot but win the visitor‘s heart: the steep west coast consists
of one superb beach after another, while on the east there are deepshadowed bays where the woods run down to the water‘s edge, and in the centre winding roads connect stone-built villages in the
traditional style. Lefkada is island and mainland together, East and
West side by side, and the length of its history allows it even to claim
the honour of giving birth to Odysseus. Its medieval castle still stands
today, mute but incontrovertible witness to the centuries of history
that have gone into the making of the soul of each Lefkadian.
