The land of Argolis is truly blessed, with its sweet winters, and warm, dry summers, its peninsula like an island. Argos is built directly on the site of the ancient city of Argos. And, if some cities became famous later, it’s because they were patiently waiting their turn. Such as Nafplion. It was building its history for at least 3,000 years. Its golden age came in the medieval period, during Frankish rule. Nafplion or Anapli, capital of the Prefecture of Argolis and the main port of the eastern Peloponnese. It is one of the most picturesque towns and has been declared a traditional settlement. Nafplion was the capital of the Greek state from 1828-1833. It has a huge Venetian castle, the watchful guard of the city and the plain all around, Palamidi, which stands proudly above the city. If one climbs the 999 steps, one can gaze out over the bastions of the Bourtzi, the jewel of the bay. The prefecture has an important history. Around Ermioni, from Argos, from Tiryns, life began in the Mesolithic period and perhaps even earlier. This is where the great civilization of Mycenae was created, here lived the Atreids, the fearsome dynasty that led Greece into the ten-year Trojan War.
